I had a great opportunity this evening to speak with a very wise and Godly woman who just got back from what sounded like a pretty amazing and rejuvenating vacation to Mexico. She was telling me about the heart time that she had where she was able to reflect on her life with an old friend and hear from God. The question they were pondering was how to make the most of each phase of life, and specifically the phase that they are in now. Her challenge to me was to see the beauty and blessing of each stage of life and catalog those memories in your mind. She said that looking back, she almost feels a sense of loss because she cannot vividly remember each time in her life as well as she wishes she could. So many times we are counting down for the future to happen instead of soaking up the present.
Her words began to make me think...How can I make sure that I don't miss a moment of my life? My mind wandered to a place of daydreaming and essentially planning my life in reverse. At the end of my life, my main objective will be to look back over what I have done and know that I have poured my life out for my savior and my family. I want to make sure that I have consistently honored and lifted high the name of Jesus. And I feel that will be most tangibly carried out in the way that I love and serve my family. I want to make sure that I play and laugh with my kids at every chance that I get. I want to be positive that I have faithfully served and loved my husband in every situation. I want to be fully present and focused on what is going on in the lives of our children. I want to attend as many events as humanly possible so that they know I am there. I want to hug, kiss, and pray with my kids close to every single night. I want to make sure that no matter the circumstances, my children never doubt my never-ending love for them. I desire to live every moment of my life as though that was the exact moment that I have been waiting for. Because truly, it is. I feel like it was just yesterday that my precious baby boy was born. And now he is speaking to me in full sentences. This life is too good to let a moment slip by.
Lord, I lift these desires up to you. I pray that I would be fully present at the present time. I pray that you would teach me and grow my heart in each situation and in every season of my life. Show me what it means to love and serve my family. Lord, I desire to bring a smile to your face and to hear you say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
